After the successful completion of our Drug Abuse Awareness Seminar last year, 10 youths came forward for Rehabilitation and understanding as a foundation the importance of prompt action, took them on with collaboration of Dr Okeafor of UPTH. We were able to Rehabilitate 4 persons out of the 10 that initially showed interest.

In order to mark their successful completion of the Rehabilitation Program, we put together a Drug Abuse Awareness Seminar 2.0. The participants were requested to invite their friends and family so they would have the opportunity of hearing and been  educated about Drug Abuse.
It was a great success and the turnout was commendable. A representative from The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Mrs. StellaMarris Amede, and another representative from Centre for Advocacy on Drug Abuse and Substance Abuse  Barr. The Foundation in Partnership with the Office of the Deputy Governor was able to empower those who completed the program with equipments to start a trade and one person was given a scholarship to pursue his dream of studying Medicine at the University of Port- Harcourt (UNIPORT). We as a Foundation is very proud of their achievements and look forward to changing the lives of many more youths in the nearest future.

On behalf of CaywoodBrown Foundation, I am pleased to announce the part-completion of Batch I of our volunteerism program. As you may recall, I informed you of the kick off of this program in October, 2017. Shortly after successful candidates were screened, mentored and placed in some prospective organizations for a period of 6 months starting in November 2017.
We also informed you about our partnership with the NLNG and Office of the Deputy Governor (“formal partners”) as well as the Port Harcourt Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (“Program Executive”) which has been very successful so far.
At the end of April 2018, five out of the twelve shortlisted candidates completed their placement. I am pleased to inform you that four of them have received confirmations for continuous employment in their organizations. We are hopeful that the remaining eight candidates will be retained at the end of Batch II of the Program. This indeed is a success story for the foundation.
We are grateful to all our partners for helping us achieve the vision of the foundation which is to ensure that all youths within our reach are empowered to become self-secure; encouraged to pursue their dreams as leaders, and inspired to become innovators and employers of labor.
Signed

Research carried out made us at Caywood Brown Foundation aware of a path Youths can use in gaining employment and climb the employability ladder with more ease. This path is called Volunteerism. The Caywood Brown Volunteerism  Program was born in collaboration with LNLG.

On 10th of October after we had screened over 100 CV's we called 25 youths who had completed their first degrees or Higher National Diplomas for an Aptitude and  written test  which ultimately led to an interview from where 12 youths were chosen. We are also partnering with PHCCMIA (Port-Harcourt Chambers of Commerce Mines, Industry and Agriculture) they would be helping us place the youths in the offices of their members.

A fortnight later, all successful candidates were invited for  a seminar at the PHCCIMA building. The Seminar was to teach them work ethics and what to expect from the workplace and how to ensure they become people who are adding value to organisations they are posted to.

Our Mental Health Seminar held in collaboration with PINNACLE MEDICAL SPEAKOUT INITIATIVE tagged "Depression, Let's Talk" was a brilliant outing. In attendance were over 70 persons both the youths, women and men.

The main speaker Dr. Maymunah Kadiri spoke about how depression is a silent killer today and a lot of people are not paying attention to it. She said that Mental Health Issues affects both kids, teenagers and adults alike. It is not just about perceptions but helping to create the right atmosphere for kids in the family. Also, being watchful and mindful of those around us always. Together we can become more mental health aware. For us as an organisation, the most exciting part of the day was when we got a call from a lady who said her husband had been struggling with depression and refuses to take his medication but after all she learnt during the Seminar, she feels better equipped to help support her husband and make sure he takes his medications and shows up for his hospital appointments too. She also said she no longer feels so isolated and alone.

A youth who was a student at one of the universities said the seminar was the best he had attended this year because it helped him understand that suicide is not an option and he would solicit for medical help anytime he feels suicidal. He said he has been struggling with these thoughts since he can remember and he had a one on one with Dr. Maymunah Kadiri which he said is a positive step towards his recovery We would like to thank Maymunah Garuba Kadiri and all our other wonderful panelists for throwing more light of this very sensitive issues. You are all STARS.

Keep shining.

NEGATIVE impact of drug abuse everybody is at stake : banigo

6/29/2017

The Deputy Governor of Rivers State Dr. Mrs. Ipalibo Harry Banigo says all hands must be on deck to kick out Drug Abuse in the Society because everybody is at risk of its negative consequences.
The Deputy Governor Stated this during a One Day Drug Abuse Awareness Seminar in Port Harcourt.
Represented by the Director Administration in the Office of the Deputy Governor, Mr. Ben Roberts the Deputy Governor said Drug Abuse as the name implies is the impulsive or inappropriate use of a mood swinging drug habitually without a physician’s prescription which negatively impacts on the human brain and body.
The negative impact of Drug Abuse is capable of destroying not only the individual who indulges in it but the entire society and the nation at large.
According to her it is expedient that we mobilize the entire citizenry to synergize the efforts of stake holders to nip this menace in the bud before it gets to the threshold of exponential proportion and becomes a Public Health Emergency.
“In this matter nobody is safe because as far as humanity is concerned, we are a close knit family, what affects your neighbor affects you for instance if your neighbors child is destroyed by drugs inadvertently you are also at risk because under the influence of drugs and illegal use of narcotics such a person can carry out actions that might cause bodily harm not only to him or herself but to other innocent people and therefore should be prevented by all means possible.” She said.
According to Dr. Banigo the use of hard drugs like marijuana, cocaine, heroin, opium and alcoholic beverages like monkey tail, shekpe, ogospere, gun powder, inhaling of dry faeces, glue and very recently the use of tramadol ‘to get high’ are very harmful to the brain and the human body as a whole and must be condemned and stopped by well-meaning citizens.
“It is on this note that the Rivers State Government commends the Cay Wood Brown Foundation a Non Governmental and Non Profit making Organization for partnering with it in the area of equipping the youths to face the intellectual, spiritual and economic challenges of the country by providing appropriate and relevant trainings and empowerment where necessary.” She stressed.
The Deputy Governor said the Governor Wike Led Administration welcomes such partnership as long as it adds value to the progress, peace and tranquility of Rivers State.
“This is why today’s Drug Awareness Campaign for youths is very important to us as Government and as a people, we have sounded it loud and clear at various fora that we believe education is a veritable tool for the liberation of our people, because education avails them the opportunity to make informed decisions on life issues” she explained.
Dr. Banigo who said “Government has deliberately invested hugely in the education sub sector to build human and infrastructural capacity as well as creating the enabling environment” further explained that “it behooves on young people to take advantage of it and better their lives, because in the long run they would discover that life is what they make of it”.
She said Governor Wike is conscious of the fact that some youths were misguided in the past to join clandestine organizations that unleashed terror on other innocent citizens and residents and as a father wanted to give them a second chance.
“This informed the decision to set up the amnesty program where thousands of youths voluntarily surrendered their arms, denounced cultism and pledged to be law abiding citizens which is a step in the right direction” she stressed.
Dr. Banigo used the opportunity to advice youths who are still basking in the euphoria that crimes like armed robbery, kidnapping, rape, cultism, gangsterism, cyber crime and ritual killings which she said are carried out most times under the influence of drugs pays, “should have a rethink because the end result is death and destruction.”
Dr. Banigo commended the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency and the Church of Nigeria Anglican Communion for also partnering with the Rivers State Government in its efforts to rid society and the youths of the misuse of illicit drugs.
Speaking on Drug Abuse and its consequences Mrs. Stella-Maris Amede of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency said it has been observed that a lot of women now indulge in Drug Abuse which according to her negatively affects women in the area of child bearing, stressing that it could lead to early menopause and severe complications in pregnancies.
Also speaking Rev. Cannon John Ubulom said divine intervention remains the key weapon to tackle the problem of Drug Abuse because it is the spiritual that controls the physical.
In her paper presentation Mrs. Carmelita Agborubere said Drug Abuse is the compulsive, excessive and self damaging use of habit forming drugs leading to addiction or dependence.
On her part, the Coordinator of Cay Wood Brown Foundation Miss Uki Asemota said the decision to carry out the Drug Abuse Awareness Seminar was because a survey carried out by the CaywoodBrown Foundation indicated that a lot of young people in the society today abuse drugs not necessarily hard drugs but even prescription drugs, hence the need to intervene.
Mr. Augustine Nwaeze of the Garden City Library Project Read Advocacy who was one of the participants said he is concerned about the plight of youths whose lives have been destroyed by drug abuse, stressing that he personally went to the various water front’s to mobilize youths for the program but regretted that all the people he mobilized could not attend because of logistics.

breast Cancer awareness

International Cancer Awareness Day

World Cancer Day was marked by the founder of the foundation, Her Excellency Dr Mrs Ipalibo Banigo the Deputy Governor of Rivers State by organizing a Cancer Awareness Program for women in collaboration with Elpis Sapphire Foundation and African Cancer Initiative. The women present were taught about Cancer, the 2 most prevalent forms of Cancer, the methods of prevention and cure. They also learnt how to do a breast self examination, the importance of good nutrition, and the importance of rest. All in all, it was a great success and those who attended learnt many new things which included:
That breast cancer not only affects women but men also
That  eating right and exercising can help prevent cancer
That multiple sexual partners can damage your cervix and lead to cervical cancer? Many people associate the risk of multiple sexual patents to Hiv infection but there's also a more deadly disease than HIV, cervical cancer.

That excessive smoking and excessive drinking of alcohol puts you at high risk of getting cancer
Also that taking oral contraceptives increases your risk of getting cancer
The conclusion was that health is wealth so we all need to pay attention to our health. See a specialist if you notice any abnormal changes in your body. Discharge of blood other than during menstruation period is not normal , see a doctor immediately. Don't take advice from just anyone please see a specialist. Early detection in cancer is key to total cure. Do regular medical checkups. Self examine your breast regularly. It's not a God-forbid matter. Cancer is no respecter of persons regardless of your age or status or religion. Do your best and let God take care of the rest.
